I hate people that just use places where they can post and just try and piss everyone else that is actually trying to find some great info from actual smart people. everyone that just swears and uses inappropriate language on posts just completely annoys me and they are actual dumb people who have nothing better to do then annoy people studying poems.

This young man is living in a world of unemployment and underemployment and he feels bored because he has lives a life of wandering the streets and once a fortnight goes into the town to sign for the benefit. Thus leading him to feeling alienated to the rest of the world, a sociopath maybe or just sick in the head but he feels as if he should make a mark on the world and should be recognized as someone of significance. So he resorts to killing and in the end murder. Little does he realize that he will become infamous instead of famous.

The meaning of the poem can be interpreted as there being a flaw in the education system as they are not showing people how to use time productively, as well as it showing the narrator as a person who honestly doesnt know what to do with his time. Also it shows what being bored can eventually do if you dont know what to do with you time linkin gto there being a flaw in the education system.
( Im also Year 9)

I am going heir GCSE and we are studing this poem. I like it. I think it describes myself sometimes. People can blank you out of life so easily, as easy as rubbing pout a mistake on paper. It protrays a lost young person whom of which we will probably encounter with alot. Although this is a teenager who has been ignored so much and his own option in his mind is to be forced to violence, this poem reflects a lot of todays youth generation - we get bored easily, education hinders some of us and we just want to have fun and be occupied. :)

The character in this poem is a man, this i found out by the actual video on youtube called 'Education For Leisure'. It makes the poem a little easier to understand as you see the emotions of the boy. This poem is thought to be the second part of Carol Anne Duffy's poem "Stealing". That poem also explores the thoughts of a misunderstood youth.

This is my favourite poem ever. I am in year 8 at the moment and I found this in book were are using at school. We're are learning about poetry but unfortunatly were not learning about this one. We are learning about 'Limbo' and 'Night of the Scorpion' instead, we just finished learning about 'Nothing's Changed', 'Island Man' and 'Blessing'. This poem is amazing.

I'm a year 11 student studying English lit at GCSE and am trying do improve my analytical skills in preperation for the courses I plan to take at college in a few months time. Although this poem was removed from our anthologys and is no longer studied at GCSE, my English teacher suggested I check this poem out as I've taken a shine to the work of Carol Ann Duffy. But for some reason I cannot seem to find any hidden meanings in this poem. I see that the (unidentified) person feels neglected by society, isolated and lonely, which is why they turn to violence and murder to obtain the feeling of superiority, but nothing else. Help?
